5 Things I Learned About Myself In 5 Places I’ve Lived

25.03.24 | Avagail | No Comments

Originally published on July 16, 2020 | minor edits made March 25, 2024
A couple of weeks ago, I revealed that after spending four years in South Korea I want to move abroad again; this time to Germany. If you follow me on Instagram, you also probably know that I’m stuck (but gratefully, safe) in California for the time being.

Because Miss ‘Rona is here to stay in the USA for a while and American passports are worthless now, my move has been postponed, likely until next May – a whole year later than planned. *insert eyeroll and crying emojis here*

Yes, it HELLA sucks; but I’m not here to complain further. No, I haven’t fully accepted it yet.

Coming back to not only the city I was born and raised in, but the actual home I grew up in (*Thank you parents for helping me save money on rent while being funemployed!*) I’ve found myself reflecting on the places I’ve lived and what they’ve taught me about myself.

These five places hold enough special meaning to me that they are actually tattooed on my left forearm in the form of coordinates – just one of the 5 tattoos I have. Side note: did you know tomorrow is National Tattoo Day? So it’s the perfect time for this post!

Here are the 5 coordinates tattooed on my arm and what I learned about myself from each place:

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA

This is the place I called home the longest and where I was born and raised. It’s where I grew up; where I lived for a few years after college; and where I find myself now.

Growing up as a middle child, I was relentlessly picked on – shoutout to my biggest headaches, Aaron & Zara! –  and because of that I also found myself doing my own thing a lot.

Thus, I learned early on that I’m independent.

SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY, CALIFORNIA

Choosing a college that was 8 hours away, this was the first time I left the comforts of home to take a leap of faith and spread my wings.

I hated living in San Diego at first. I was in the same state, but it was a culture shock not being in the diversity of the Bay Area or a school where the majority was Asian. I was extremely homesick to the point that I applied for a second semester transfer in my freshman year.

Alas, other plans were in store for me. In my Tagalog 101 class, I learned about a volunteer opportunity with the Filipino-American student organization on campus, AB Samahan. Through that org, I found my people. *Kumusta to all my Filipinx readers!*

That was the first time I really learned that people can feel like “home” as much as a place does. Still missing family but finding comfort in my new bubble, my independence kicked in. I decided to stay.

That decision taught me that I am brave and resilient.

CAPE BYRON LIGHTHOUSE, AUSTRALIA

OKAAAAY, so technically I didn’t live in Australia. But it was my first big solo trip and where I fell in love with traveling. I was there for a month on a volunteer and adventure trip.

Spending one week in a tent during Australian winter, where most nights there was a downpour, then a week in cabins on a date palm farm…it felt like living there. For the next two weeks, our volunteer group traveled down the eastern coast from Cairns to Sydney.

Snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, white water rafting and jumping off 4 meter high rocks into the rapids, taking surfing lessons, and swimming in emerald lakes; sounds super fun, right?

Not for me! I’M A SCAREDY CAT WHEN IT COMES TO DEEP WATER EVEN TODAY. Yet, the FOMO was hella real because this was my first time traveling, so I did all those things anyways.

Facing those fears to enjoy my trip to the fullest taught me that I have an adventurous heart.

PORTO SAN GIORGIO, ITALY

My first time actually living abroad was a dream come true. Italy was the top international destination I wanted to visit. I found the opportunity to do so while living with an Italian host family for three months.

Being another volunteer trip, my work was teaching 3rd-8th grade Italian students English for about 15 hours per week. At home with my Italian family, I helped Gaia and Francesco with English homework, and Paola and Daniele – my host mom and dad – with conversational English.

Could I have found a more perfect situation? At the time, NOPE! I fell in love with working with youth and the short hours allowed me to journey all over Italy in my free time.

In the brief time I spent in this Italian beachside town, I learned that I am passionate about teaching.

YEOJU, SOUTH KOREA

When I got this tattoo in December 2016 I was nearing the end of my first year teaching English. With intentions of going home once my contract was finished, I thought that the year with some of the biggest changes in my life up to that point taught me that as much as I love traveling and living abroad, “home” aka California, is where I belong.

By now y’all know that’s FAR from the truth! Upon realizing that one year there wasn’t enough for me, I decided at the last minute to stay if I could find another teaching job. I’m a true believer that everything happens for a reason. When I was hired by a new school, I knew in my soul I was meant to stay. I ended up teaching there for 3 years.

Those life changing events of 2016 didn’t teach me that I belonged at “home” in California. They taught me that I had a tendency to put others’ needs before mine and do what was “expected” of me.

It took 28 years but intentionally choosing myself 100% for the first time in my life, I learned that underneath all my care for others, I am free-spirited.

Of course these places taught me more than just these five things, but these 5 are the most important things I learned about who I am as a person.

Tell me, what is one place – domestic or international – that you’ve lived and what has it taught you? I’d like to get to know more about my readers!

With wanderlust & ‘til next time,
Ava

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again:

🗣️ IT’S THE PEOPLE THAT MAKE (or break) THE EXPERIENCE / *TRIP / ADVENTURES.

I had a potential creator opportunity to travel internationally for 2 weeks in November and naturally, was bummed when I didn’t get it.

While it would’ve been awesome to be amongst digital nomad / remote worker community AND travel internationally for the first time this year, the universe knew it wasn’t what I needed.

What did I need instead of traveling?

💜To be with my at-home / Bay Area community
💜To keep promises I made
💜To be present with family for missing out on a lot of events through the years
💜To spend a weekend getaway being surrounded by Pinay joy creating genuine connections and friendship
💜 To foster connections with other Pinays I made through networking

..and much more because there was a lot that went on in those 2 weeks that aren’t in these pics and vids!

I try to practice gratitude everyday, but for a lot of us in the USA, November especially has us reflecting on what we’re grateful for.

So.. how was your November? What’s something you’re grateful for as 2024 approaches?

*Yes, even when I solo travel bc solo travel ≠ being alone!

**Second to last clip should say: “making mac n cheese from scratch with my niece / lil bestie”

But still had a lot of fun and would totally do it again!

So if you wanna take Pilates classes at a small, local, woman-owned studio in the Bay Area with a dope instructor, def check ‘em out!

Just in case anyone else needed to hear this ⤵️

“The struggle is real when something we love becomes so central to how we’re perceived/how we perceive ourselves!! It really is a form of grief 🥺”

I thought I was being OA (🇵🇭 “overacting”) when I first voiced that I felt lost without traveling this year and that I was grieving that part of myself.

But my friends at @brbcrying.podcast (where I got the most on-brand hat for me 🥲) sent me that message when I shared this on stories the other day.

Thought it could help you if you’re going through the same feeling as you navigate a different chapter or season in life - whether it’s about not traveling, a relationship ending, a career change, or anything else.

I know it can be tough especially during the fall & holiday season, but…

IT’S OKAY TO FEEL ALL THE FEELS,
& IT’S MORE THAN OKAY TO BE A CRYBABY
YOU’RE NOT BEING EXTRA OR OA,
AND YOU & ME… WE GOT THIS 💜

P.S. Continuing to stay rooted in the Bay Area for the rest of 2024, but Travel Ava *will* make a comeback! Manifesting that for 2025 🙌🏽

In 2021, 2022, and 2023 I volunteered for the event.

This year, I was contracted as the Retail Vendor Coordinator and played a part in bringing the event to life.

It’s quite a change from my usual freelance work (writing or social media management), but having a chance to work with the @makeitmariko and @kultivatelabs teams on an event for the Filipino community here in the Bay Area was EVERYTHING 🤩

Thank you Gina for the opportunity and everyone else on the team for welcoming me 💜

Hope to work together again soon and if anyone needs help with events… hmu - I’m so open to exploring more on this new adventure!

Take it from someone who’s been there: SOLO TRAV Take it from someone who’s been there: SOLO TRAVEL HEALS, but it won’t solve everything.

Sure, things like being in a destination with newfound freedom, exploring a new place, partying all night long, making new friends, or having a travel fling can be refreshing and make you forget about the heartbreak.

But in order to truly glow up from the inside out while solo traveling, you have to…

…give yourself grace when the old feelings come up
…acknowledge the hurt when it resurfaces
…embrace the uncomfortableness in growth
…do the tough inner work to rebuild that self-love and find your self-worth if you’ve lost that sense of self

It’s gonna suck sometimes and you might find yourself crying while sitting on the floor of your hostel’s common room when the tough sh*t comes up, but when you face that head on instead of acting like it doesn’t exist or ignoring it - that’s where the real healing and glow up happens.

After the most toxic breakup followed by months of therapy, tears, anger, sadness, and yes… moments where I cried on the floor of my hostel’s common room during a 2.5 month solo trip 🥲 I was traveling through Greece, falling in love with a new country, and ✨THRIVING✨

So I celebrated myself with a photoshoot to capture that Ava (the one who went from being the most broken and lost version of herself to overcoming the lack of self-worth, the doubt, and the feelings of not being enough or lovable by being her most vulnerable self)

And now y’all get to see the pics and/or vids every year around that time cus I will never not share these 😝

Important tips you need to know before visiting @w Important tips you need to know before visiting @worldofcocacola in Atlanta ⤵️

One of the best parts of this famous Atlanta attraction is getting to try hella flavors of Coca-Cola brand drinks from around the world.

This travel girlie def had to try as many as I can to travel the world through taste and I lost count of how many I sampled…

but these are the ones that definitely stood out to me:

❌DON’T TRY THESE FLAVORS❌
(unless you like the descriptions 😅)

🇨🇳 Sour Plum Fanta from China
WHY WAS IT GIVING BBQ SAUCE?! And it wasn’t just me… there were 3 other people around me that agreed

🇮🇹 BEVERLY from Italy
I have a special place in my heart for Italy but this drink was not it… sorry not sorry! It just tasted so bitter 😖

🤤DEFINITELY GIVE THESE A TRY!🤤

🇰🇷 Minute Maid Joy from South Korea
This apple lychee flavor juice was hella delicious and made me wonder why I don’t ever remember drinking it the 4 years I lived there 🤔

🇵🇭 Royal Watermelon from the Philippines
I’m not even a watermelon flavor girlie but I had to try it bc duhhh and I actually loved it!

Which one of these are you trying first?

ICYMI in stories: this is the coolest thing I did ICYMI in stories: this is the coolest thing I did in Atlanta!

When I asked for recommendations before traveling to ATL, my Zumba fam @j0hnnh0lleee connected me with her good friend and fellow Bay Area girlie @tez415sf who lives there & works at some of the TV studios.

When Tez asked if I wanted a tour, of course I said YES! (Especially since the big CNN center closed earlier this year - FYI if you’re planning a trip to ATL)

During the tour I got to:

🎥 Visit multiple studios including @cnn, @nbatv, & @mlb on @tbsnetwork
🎥 Read news from a prompter and pretend I was an anchorwoman
🎥 Learn about behind-the-scenes work that goes into producing shows
🎥 See where a lot of the off camera magic happens
🎥 Spill my own breaking news in an impromptu tea sesh 👀
🎥 Show everyone how horrible I am at baseball LOL 😅

SWIPE TO SEE IT ALL!

In another life I think I could be a TV host 🤗 HBU? Could you be an on-camera personality?

P.S. This is another prime example of why the people I meet is my favorite part of traveling - because I always end up having such cool adventures with them!
